sepoys

Colonial Indian troops

Sepoys were Indian soldiers serving under European, especially British, military command during the colonial period.

The term is most associated with the armies of the British East India Company: The sepoys drilled in the courtyard.

The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 was a major uprising against British rule in India.

The word comes from Persian for soldier.
