Indian Mutiny
1857 colonial uprising
The Indian Mutiny is the British term for the 1857 uprising against East India Company rule in India, beginning with a rebellion among Indian soldiers (sepoys) and spreading across northern and central regions.
Indians call it the First War of Independence or the Sepoy Mutiny.
The violent suppression ended Company rule and transferred control to the British Crown.
