roof tiles

House top pieces

Roof tiles are overlapping pieces of fired clay, concrete, slate, or other materials used to cover and weatherproof a roof.

They come in various shapes—flat, curved, or interlocking—and are laid in rows from the bottom up so water runs off without penetrating: The old farmhouse had terracotta roof tiles weathered to a soft orange.

Unlike shingles, which are typically thinner and nailed flat, tiles are heavier and often hooked or clipped into place.
