shingling

Laying roof tiles

Shingling is the act of applying shingles to a roof or wall, overlapping them like fish scales so water runs off rather than seeping through: They spent the weekend shingling the garage.

The term extends to any overlapping arrangement—hair cut in graduated layers is shingled, and in computing, shingled magnetic recording stacks data tracks to increase storage density.
