weatherboarding

Overlapping wall siding

Weatherboarding is horizontal wooden boards attached to the exterior of a building, with each board overlapping the one below to shed rain and protect the structure.

The term refers both to the material and the technique of installing it: The old farmhouse was clad in weatherboarding.

Also called clapboard in American English.
