rivermen

Waterway transport laborers

Rivermen are men who work on rivers—boatmen, bargemen, ferrymen, or raft operators who make their living navigating inland waterways.

The term evokes a historical era when rivers were primary commercial arteries: The rivermen poled their flatboats downstream to New Orleans.

It can also describe those who simply live along rivers and know their ways intimately.
