Erie Canal

Albany-Buffalo waterway

The Erie Canal is a waterway in New York State connecting the Hudson River to Lake Erie, completed in 1825.

It transformed American commerce by opening a shipping route between the Atlantic seaboard and the Great Lakes, making New York City the nation's dominant port.

The Erie Canal made it possible to ship goods from the Midwest to the East Coast.
