merchant mariners
Civilian cargo sailors
Merchant mariners are civilian sailors who work aboard commercial ships rather than military vessels.
They crew cargo ships, tankers, container ships, and other vessels engaged in trade and commerce.
During wartime, merchant mariners often transport military supplies and equipment, serving in a quasi-military capacity while remaining technically civilian: Merchant mariners faced submarine attacks throughout the war.
