gag
Bit of comedy
A gag is something placed in or over the mouth to prevent speech or screaming—a cloth, ball, or restraint.
To gag someone is to silence them this way, or figuratively to suppress their expression: The court order gagged the press.
Gag also means to retch or choke: The smell made me gag.
As comedy slang, a gag is a joke or prank: a running gag, a sight gag.
A gag order prohibits public discussion of legal proceedings.
