asphyxiant

Oxygen-displacing hazard gas

An asphyxiant is a substance that causes asphyxiation—death or unconsciousness from lack of oxygen.

Some asphyxiants are toxic gases that directly interfere with breathing; others are simple asphyxiants like nitrogen or helium that displace oxygen without being poisonous themselves.

Carbon monoxide is a common household asphyxiant.

The adjective describes anything capable of causing suffocation: asphyxiant gases.
