mechanical ventilation
Machine-powered respiration
Mechanical ventilation is the use of a machine to assist or replace breathing, typically in patients who cannot breathe adequately on their own.
A ventilator pushes air into the lungs through a tube inserted in the airway or through a face mask.
In architecture and engineering, mechanical ventilation refers to systems that move air through buildings using fans and ducts rather than relying on natural airflow: The building code requires mechanical ventilation in windowless bathrooms.
