asbestos
Hazardous fibrous mineral
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral once widely used for insulation and fireproofing because it resists heat and doesn't burn.
When disturbed, asbestos releases microscopic fibers that cause serious lung diseases and cancers when inhaled.
Its use is now banned or heavily restricted in most countries: The old building had to be tested for asbestos before renovation.
