cattails

Wetland brown spikes

Cattails are tall marsh plants with long, flat leaves and a distinctive brown, cylindrical seed head that resembles a sausage on a stick.

They grow in dense stands along pond edges, ditches, and wetlands throughout North America.

The seed heads eventually burst into cottony fluff.

Also called bulrushes in some regions: The pond was ringed with cattails.
