hob

Flat cooking area

A hob is the flat cooking surface on top of a stove, particularly in British English—what Americans usually call a stovetop or burner: She set the kettle on the hob.

In older usage, a hob was a shelf beside a fireplace for keeping things warm.

Separately, hob is an archaic word for a hobgoblin or mischievous sprite, surviving mainly in the phrase raise hob or play hob, meaning to cause trouble.
