broiler

Oven's top element

A broiler is a young chicken raised for meat, typically slaughtered at six to eight weeks.

The word also names the heating element in an oven that cooks food from above with direct high heat: Put the steaks under the broiler for five minutes.

By extension, a broiler can be any unbearably hot place: It's a broiler out there today.
