random variable

Probabilistic outcome function

A random variable is a quantity whose value depends on the outcome of a random process.

In probability and statistics, it assigns numerical values to possible outcomes: if you roll a die, the random variable might be the number showing.

Random variables can be discrete (countable outcomes like coin flips) or continuous (any value in a range, like heights or temperatures).

The expected value of a random variable is its long-run average.
