endogenous

From within itself

Endogenous means arising from within an organism, system, or process rather than from external causes.

In biology, endogenous substances are produced by the body itself: endogenous hormones, endogenous opioids.

In economics, endogenous variables are determined within a model rather than imposed from outside.

The opposite is exogenous.

The depression appeared to be endogenous rather than triggered by life events.
