confidence interval

Probable parameter bounds

A confidence interval is a range of values, calculated from sample data, that likely contains the true value of something being measured.

A 95% confidence interval means that if you repeated the study many times, about 95% of the calculated intervals would contain the true value.

The poll showed 52% support, with a confidence interval of plus or minus 3 points.

Wider intervals indicate less precision; narrower intervals indicate more.
