raftsmen
Timber water transporters
Raftsmen is the plural of raftsman—a person who works on or navigates a raft, especially one who transports logs or goods downstream on a timber raft.
The occupation was common in 19th-century America when rivers served as highways for moving lumber: The raftsmen guided their cargo through the rapids.
