log driver
Timber float worker
A log driver is a worker who guides floating logs down rivers to sawmills, a once-common occupation in the timber industry.
The job required balance and agility, as drivers walked on moving logs and used pike poles to break up jams.
The log drivers worked the spring river drive for weeks.
The profession has largely disappeared with modern trucking.
