crosscut

Cut against grain

Crosscut describes cutting across the grain rather than along it.

A crosscut saw has teeth designed to sever wood fibers perpendicular to their direction.

The term extends to any diagonal or transverse cut.

In film, to crosscut is to alternate between two scenes happening simultaneously, building tension or showing parallel action: The director crosscut between the chase and the ticking bomb.
