through-hole

Drilled all through

Through-hole describes electronic components designed to be mounted by inserting wire leads through holes drilled in a circuit board, then soldering them on the other side.

This older mounting technology contrasts with surface-mount components, which attach directly to the board's surface.

Through-hole remains common for components requiring strong mechanical bonds or handling high power: through-hole capacitors, through-hole resistors.
