rabbet joint

Notched wood connection

A rabbet joint is a woodworking joint formed by cutting a stepped recess along the edge or end of one piece so another piece can fit flush into it.

The L-shaped channel, called a rabbet, creates a clean corner where two boards meet at right angles, commonly used in cabinet backs, drawer construction, and picture frames.

The carpenter used rabbet joints to attach the back panel to the bookcase.

Rabbet joints provide more gluing surface than simple butt joints while remaining easy to cut.
