kerf

Slot from sawing

Kerf is the slot or groove cut by a saw blade, or the width of material removed during cutting.

Woodworkers and machinists account for kerf when measuring: Allow for the kerf when cutting these boards to length.

The term extends to any cutting tool's removal width—laser cutters and plasma torches also have kerf.
