push-off

Skater's starting motion

A push-off is the act of pushing against a surface to propel yourself—a swimmer's push-off from the pool wall, a skater's push-off from the ice.

The term captures that initial thrust that launches movement: She got a strong push-off at the start of the race.

In British slang, push-off can be a dismissive command meaning go away.
