psych

Unnerve before competing

Psych functions primarily as a verb meaning to prepare mentally or get into the right state of mind: I need to psych myself up for this interview.

To psych someone out is to intimidate or unnerve them through psychological tactics: He tried to psych out his opponent before the match.

As an exclamation, psych! (also spelled sike) reverses what was just said—a gotcha moment: I got you a new car! Psych!

As a noun or adjective, psych is informal shorthand for psychology or psychiatric: a psych major, the psych ward.
