awesome

Inspiring wonder, slangily

Until the late 20th century, awesome was used mainly for things that genuinely inspired awe and it was often used in a religious context.

It is a frequent word in Bible translations: Before our own eyes, the Lord performed great and awesome deeds of power against Egypt, Pharaoh, and his entire dynasty.

Today, awesome has much wider and weaker use and is synonymous with such words as great, remarkable, or fantastic: You get Friday off? Awesome!
