Rad is slang for excellent or impressive, originally surfer and skater vocabulary from the 1980s: That trick was rad.
The word is a clipping of radical.
Rad also serves as a unit measuring absorbed radiation dose, though this technical use has largely given way to the gray. (All-caps RAD may be an acronym.)
