prefectures

Japanese governmental divisions

Prefectures are administrative districts in certain countries, particularly Japan and France.

In Japan, the 47 prefectures function somewhat like states or provinces: Osaka Prefecture, Hokkaido Prefecture.

The term derives from the Latin office of prefect, an appointed administrator.

A prefecture is also the office or residence of a prefect.
