central government
Federal ruling body
Central government is the national or federal authority that governs an entire country, as distinct from regional, state, or local governments.
It typically handles matters affecting the whole nation—defense, foreign policy, currency: The central government sets tax policy that the provinces must follow.
In federal systems, power is divided between central government and constituent states; in unitary systems, the central government holds most authority.
