outlawry
Life outside law
Outlawry is the state of being an outlaw or the practice of living outside the law.
Historically, it was a formal legal punishment in which a person was declared outside the protection of the law—anyone could harm them without consequence.
The word now describes lawless behavior generally: The frontier was known for outlawry and vigilante justice.
