postilion
Carriage horse rider
A postilion is a person who rides the left horse of a team pulling a carriage, guiding the horses when there is no coachman on the box.
The position was necessary for certain carriage configurations and for negotiating difficult terrain.
The term is historical, belonging to the era of horse-drawn transport: The postilion urged the horses forward through the mud.
