teamster

Drives for wages

A teamster is someone who drives a truck for a living.

The term originally meant a driver of a team of horses or draft animals pulling a wagon, and that sense persists in historical contexts: The teamster guided his mules along the mountain trail.

The word now almost always refers to professional truck drivers: The teamsters hauled freight across three states. (Capitalized Teamster refers to a union member.)
