levees

River overflow blockers

Levees are embankments built along rivers or coastlines to prevent flooding.

They may be natural ridges formed by sediment deposits or artificial structures of earth, concrete, or other materials: The levees failed during the hurricane, flooding the lower wards.

In the American South, a levee can also be a landing place on a river.

The verb means to provide with levees: The Army Corps of Engineers leveed the Mississippi.
