mire

Wet, sucking earth

Mire is deep mud or swampy ground that traps whatever enters it: The wagon wheels sank into the mire.

To mire is to stick fast in such ground, or figuratively, to become entangled in difficulty: mired in debt, mired in controversy.

The word suggests something that holds you back and is hard to escape.
