dune

Beach's sandy hill

A dune is a hill or ridge of sand shaped by wind.

Dunes form along coastlines and in deserts, constantly shifting as wind moves grains from one side to the other.

Beach dunes protect inland areas from storm surges.

The children ran up and down the dunes.

Sand dunes can grow to hundreds of feet tall in places like the Sahara. (Capitalized Dune is the science fiction novel and franchise.)
