drainage ditch
Roadside water trench
A drainage ditch is a channel dug to carry away excess water from roads, fields, or other areas.
Unlike natural streams, drainage ditches are deliberately constructed and maintained to prevent flooding or waterlogging: The car slid off the icy road and landed in a drainage ditch.
They're common alongside rural highways and at the edges of farmland.
