waterlogging

Ground becomes swamped

Waterlogging is the saturation of soil or land with water, preventing proper drainage and depriving plant roots of oxygen.

Agricultural land becomes waterlogged from excessive irrigation, poor drainage, or prolonged rainfall: Waterlogging destroyed much of the wheat crop.

The term also applies to wood or other materials that have absorbed so much water they become heavy and unworkable.
