Diked reclaimed lands
Polders are low-lying tracts of land reclaimed from the sea or other bodies of water, enclosed by dikes and kept dry through drainage systems.
The term is most associated with the Netherlands, where polders have been created for centuries: Much of Holland sits on polders below sea level.
The word extends to similar land reclamation projects elsewhere.
