upland
Elevated terrain region
Upland refers to elevated terrain—higher ground as opposed to lowlands, valleys, or coastal areas.
As an adjective, it describes things found in or characteristic of such regions: upland meadows, upland birds.
The plural uplands often names a specific elevated region: the Scottish Uplands.
In ecology, upland distinguishes drier elevated areas from wetlands.
