Friesland

Northern Netherlands region

Friesland is a province in the northern Netherlands, known for its distinct Frisian language and culture.

The region has a strong agricultural tradition, particularly dairy farming, and is famous for its lakes, canals, and the annual Elfstedentocht ice-skating race when winters are cold enough.

Friesland is home to the Frisian people, whose language is the closest living relative to English.
