land reclamation
Making ground anew
Land reclamation is the process of creating usable land from water or wasteland.
Most often it refers to filling in coastal areas, marshes, or shallow seas to extend shorelines: The Netherlands has centuries of experience with land reclamation.
It also covers restoring land damaged by mining, pollution, or erosion to productive use: The old strip mine underwent land reclamation and is now a park.
