placenta

Womb's exchange organ

The placenta is the organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy, connecting the developing fetus to the uterine wall and enabling nutrient uptake, waste elimination, and gas exchange through the mother's blood supply.

It is expelled shortly after birth, at which point it is sometimes called the afterbirth.

In botany, placenta refers to the part of the ovary wall where ovules are attached.
