chorion

Outermost fetal covering

The chorion is the outermost membrane surrounding an embryo in reptiles, birds, and mammals.

In humans, it forms the fetal contribution to the placenta, facilitating nutrient and gas exchange between mother and fetus.

Chorionic villus sampling is a prenatal diagnostic procedure.

The chorion also refers to the protective outer layer of an insect egg.
