amnion

Embryo's inner wrap

The amnion is the innermost membrane surrounding an embryo in reptiles, birds, and mammals.

It forms a fluid-filled sac that cushions and protects the developing organism.

Animals possessing this membrane—including humans—are called amniotes, distinguished from amphibians and fish whose embryos develop without it.
