amniotic sac
Womb's protective bubble
The amniotic sac is the fluid-filled membrane that surrounds and protects a developing embryo or fetus in mammals, reptiles, and birds.
Often called the "bag of waters," it contains amniotic fluid that cushions the fetus against physical shock and maintains a stable temperature.
The sac typically ruptures at the onset of labor—when someone's water breaks—though it occasionally requires medical intervention to rupture.
Babies born with the sac intact are said to be born "in the caul."
