contractions

Don't and won't

Contractions are shortened forms created by combining words and omitting letters, marked by an apostrophe: can't, won't, I'm, they're.

In physiology, contractions are the tightening of muscles—particularly the rhythmic uterine contractions of labor: Her contractions were five minutes apart.

Any shortening or shrinking can be called a contraction: economic contraction, the contraction of a cooling metal.
