marsupial
Mammal with pouch
A marsupial is a mammal that carries its young in a pouch.
Unlike placental mammals, marsupials give birth to undeveloped offspring that continue growing in the mother's external pouch.
Kangaroos, koalas, opossums, and wombats are marsupials.
Most live in Australia and nearby islands, though opossums are native to the Americas.
The word also serves as an adjective: marsupial species, marsupial reproduction.
