piston rings
Engine compression bands
Piston rings are metal rings fitted into grooves around a piston in an engine or compressor.
They seal the gap between the piston and cylinder wall, preventing combustion gases from escaping and regulating oil consumption.
Most pistons have multiple rings—compression rings to contain pressure and oil rings to scrape excess lubricant from the cylinder walls.
The engine was burning oil because the piston rings were worn.
