cylinder head

Combustion chamber cover

The cylinder head is the detachable upper portion of an internal combustion engine, bolted atop the engine block to seal the cylinders.

It contains the combustion chambers and typically houses intake and exhaust valves, spark plugs, and fuel injectors.

Gasket failure between the head and block—a blown head gasket—is a common and serious engine problem.
